Hampton Countertop Pros: Countertops in Hampton, VA
Hampton Countertop Pros measures, cuts and fits new countertops for kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor kitchens in Hampton, Virginia.
Countertops for Hampton homes
Some of our countertop jobs are a straight swap. The old top comes off, a new one goes onto the same cabinets, and the sink drops back into the same hole. Others grow into a remodel, with a sink that moves or an island that needs power. Hampton Countertop Pros takes on both. We'll tell you early which kind you have, because that decides whether the city gets involved.
We work all over Hampton and the rest of the Peninsula, including Newport News, Poquoson and Yorktown. We also cross the water to Norfolk and Portsmouth.
Kitchens, baths and the backyard
Kitchen countertops
Our kitchen countertops work covers the long runs, the corners and the island. We note where the sink, dishwasher and range sit before we draw anything up.
Bathroom vanity tops
We fit bathroom vanity tops with the holes cut for the bowl and faucet you've picked. Bring us the model numbers and we'll cut to suit.
Outdoor kitchen countertops
For outdoor kitchen countertops, tell us if the spot is under a roof or out in the open. We'll suggest materials from there.
Natural stone
Granite countertops
We fit granite countertops on kitchen runs, islands and bar tops. Before we cut, we'll show you where the seams will fall on your slab.
Marble countertops
We fit marble countertops in bathrooms and kitchens. Tell us what you spill most, like coffee, wine or tomato sauce, and we'll tell you how marble is likely to take it.
Quartzite countertops
Quartzite and quartz sound alike, but they aren't the same thing. The U.S. Geological Survey defines quartzite as a rock that formed from sandstone. We fit quartzite countertops in kitchens and on islands.
Soapstone countertops
Soapstone is a rock with talc in it, and the U.S. Geological Survey calls talc the softest mineral. We fit soapstone countertops in kitchens and on islands. Ask to touch a sample before you decide.
Engineered, poured and wood tops
Quartz countertops
Quartz countertops are engineered stone, and OSHA describes engineered stone as man-made. We fit quartz countertops when you'd rather pick from a sample board than walk a slab yard.
Solid surface countertops
We fit solid surface countertops on vanities and laundry counters. Bring a paint chip and we'll find a color close to it.
Porcelain countertops
We fit porcelain countertops when you want a thin top in a modern kitchen. Ask to see a corner piece, so you know what the edge will look like.
Concrete countertops
We fit concrete countertops in outdoor kitchens, and indoors where you want a shape no slab comes in.
Butcher block countertops
We fit butcher block countertops on islands and coffee bars. We'll tell you what care the wood you pick will need.
Replace, repair, finish
Countertop replacement
With countertop replacement, we take out the old top, check the cabinets are level, then fit the new one.
Countertop repair
Got a chip by the dishwasher or a seam that's opened up? Ask about countertop repair before you replace a whole run.
Backsplash installation
Once the new top is in, we do backsplash installation, tiling the strip of wall above the counter so it meets the new top cleanly.
Houses built before 1978
The EPA says about three-quarters of the homes in the United States built before 1978 still contain some lead-based paint. It says any renovation, repair or painting job in a pre-1978 home with lead-based paint can easily create dangerous lead dust.
On a countertop job, the paint we're most likely to disturb is on the wall behind the old backsplash. Under the EPA's rule, anyone paid to do work that disturbs painted surfaces in a home built before 1978 must be certified, and their workers trained in lead-safe work practices. The EPA recommends that homeowners hire a lead-safe certified contractor, and it has an online search to find one.
If your house is that old, ask whoever quotes you whether their firm is EPA lead-safe certified.
Permits in Hampton
The City of Hampton keeps a short list of jobs that need a permit and jobs that don't. Replacing a plumbing fixture in the same location doesn't need one, unless it's a gas water heater. Water lines, electrical wiring, gas lines, gas appliances and sheetrock (drywall) are all on the list that does.
So when the sink goes back in the same spot, we read that as fixture replacement. If the sink moves, the island gets a new outlet, or the wall behind the counter needs new drywall, check with the city's permit office first.
What to get in writing
- The material name, color and thickness for each piece.
- A drawing with the seams, overhangs and every cutout marked.
- The edge you picked.
- Whether taking out and hauling away the old tops is in the price.
- Who unhooks and reconnects the sink, faucet, dishwasher and range.
- If the house was built before 1978, the firm's EPA lead-safe certification.
- If the job needs a permit, whose name goes on it.
Questions about countertops in Hampton
Do I need a permit if my sink goes back in the same spot?
The city's list says replacing a plumbing fixture in the same location doesn't need a permit, other than a gas water heater. Water lines do need one. If you're not sure where your job falls, call the city's permit office.
Can you put a new top right over my old laminate?
We take the old top off first. That way we can check the cabinets underneath and set the new top level.
Can I keep my old backsplash?
Sometimes. It depends on how it's stuck on and whether it lines up with the new top. We'll look at it when we measure.
I'm tearing out the old counters myself. Do the lead rules apply to me?
Usually not. The EPA says its rule generally doesn't apply to homeowners working on their own pre-1978 home. It does apply if you rent out all or part of the home, run a child care center in it, or buy, fix up and sell homes for profit. Either way, the EPA says to use lead-safe work practices if you do the work yourself.
